É fascinante ler “Sonhos de uma Teoria Final”, de Steven Weinberg[1]. Do início ao fim voltamos a confirmar como é permanente e incansável a trajetória da Ciência e seus cientistas. A Ciência é como uma grande novela, uma história de detetive, e nada fácil de entender. E não há um fim previsível para esta longa história. Weinberg nos conta que depois da 1ª guerra mundial os astrônomos sujeitaram a Relatividade Geral a mais um teste experimental, a medida da deflexão dos raios de luz pelo Sol durante o eclipse solar de 1919. Os fótons num raio de luz são defletidos por campos gravitacionais na teoria de Einstein da mesma maneira que um cometa entrando no sistema solar é defletido pelo campo gravitacional do Sol à medida que faz a curva em torno do Sol e volta ao espaço interestelar. É claro que a deflexão da luz é muito menor que a deflexão de um cometa, pois a luz viaja muito mais rapidamente, do mesmo modo que um cometa rápido é menos defletido que um cometa lento.
